๐ŸŒฟ Insulation R-Value Calculator UAE

With air conditioning accounting for up to 70 percent of electricity consumption in UAE buildings, thermal insulation is one of the most economically important building material decisions you will make. The right insulation specification can reduce cooling costs by 20 to 40 percent.

Our Insulation R-Value Calculator helps UAE engineers, architects, and developers calculate thermal resistance and U-values for any insulation material and thickness, with automatic compliance checking against Estidama and Al Sa’fat green building standards.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Select the insulation material from the dropdown โ€” each has a specific thermal conductivity (lambda) value
  2. Enter the insulation thickness in millimetres
  3. Select the application area โ€” roof, external wall, floor, or internal
  4. Click Calculate for R-value, U-value, Estidama compliance rating, and performance grade

๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ช UAE Tip: For UAE flat roofs, target a U-value of 0.25 W/m2K or below for Estidama Pearl 1 compliance. PU foam gives the best thermal performance per millimetre. XPS is the best value-for-money option for most UAE applications. AAC blocks alone do not meet UAE insulation requirements โ€” additional insulation is always needed on external walls.

The Formula Explained

R-Value = Insulation Thickness (m) / Thermal Conductivity Lambda (W/mK). U-Value = 1 / Total R-Value. Target: Roof U less than 0.25, External Wall U less than 0.40 for Estidama Pearl 1 compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What R-value is required for UAE roofs?

Target R-value of 4.0 m2K/W or above for UAE flat roofs (Estidama Pearl 1). This requires approximately 120mm of XPS or 90mm of PIR insulation. Check specific project requirements with your Estidama consultant.

Is insulation mandatory in UAE?

Yes. Abu Dhabi Estidama Pearl Building Rating System and Dubai Al Sa’fat Green Building regulations both mandate minimum U-values for external building envelope elements. Non-compliance results in building permit refusal.

What is the payback period for roof insulation in UAE?

Typically 2 to 4 years through energy savings. A properly insulated roof can save AED 3,000 to 8,000 per year in cooling costs for a typical UAE villa, depending on size and usage.
